Growing Cymbidium Orchids in Tasmania
Cymbidium orchids are a true winter delight, and here in Tasmania, we’re lucky to have the ideal climate for them to thrive. With their elegant arching sprays and long-lasting blooms, they’re a must-have for anyone wanting a splash of colour in the cooler months.
At Harmony, we’ve just received a stunning new batch of Cymbidiums—perfect for gifting (hello, Mother’s Day!) or treating yourself.
Where to grow them
Cymbidiums love bright, filtered light. A sunny patio, under a deciduous tree, or a spot with morning sun and afternoon shade is ideal. While they enjoy our cool nights, they do need protection from heavy frost—so move pots under cover or into a sheltered position if temps really dip.
Water and feeding
Keep the potting mix moist but not soggy—especially while they’re forming buds. In the warmer months, a regular feed with orchid fertiliser will keep them powering along. In autumn, switch to a bloom-boosting fertiliser to help encourage strong flowering.
Potting and care
Use a chunky orchid mix for good drainage, and repot every two to three years in spring. If dividing, make sure each new piece has at least three pseudobulbs. Trim off old flower spikes and any spent or damaged leaves to keep the plant looking its best.
Pest watch
Snails and slugs love hiding in orchid leaves, so keep an eye out. A sprinkle of pet-safe snail bait or placing pots up on stands can help. Also check regularly for scale and mealybugs, particularly around the base of the leaves.
Blooms worth the wait
With the right care, Cymbidiums will reward you with breathtaking blooms in late winter through to spring—and they’ll often flower for six to eight weeks or more. The blooms are stunning in the garden and just as beautiful indoors as a cut flower.
Whether you’re new to orchids or a seasoned grower, Cymbidiums are a joy to grow in Tasmania. Pop in and see the gorgeous colours in-store now—or shop online for delivery straight to Mum in time for Mother’s Day.
