The Flower Garden - Festive Colour

Published by Andrew clark on 21st Nov 2025

December always feels like the garden has finally decided to show off. The longer days, the warm mornings and the hum of pollinators moving through the flowers give everything a lift. It is the time of year when colour becomes effortless. Pots burst, baskets brim, and garden beds settle into their summer rhythm. It is also when so many of our favourite plants come into their own, bringing that festive feeling right to your front door.

One of my absolute favourites to talk about at this time of year is our Harmony Easy 6 range. These little six packs have become a bit of a crowd favourite and for good reason. They are brilliant value, they give you instant colour, and they are incredibly versatile. I always say they are the quickest way to make a garden look like you have put in hours of work, even if all you have done is pop a few into a basket or a pot. The colours mix beautifully, the plants are tough and they always seem to lift a space the moment they are planted. The best part is that the Easy 6 range is exclusive to us at Harmony, so you will not find them anywhere else.

Kangaroo paws are also stealing the show right now. They are in full flower and they love this summer heat. There is something wonderfully Australian about seeing those tall, colourful paws reaching above the foliage, and the birds and pollinators think so too. The honeyeaters adore them. We have a great selection in the nursery at the moment with varieties suited to pots and others that grow beautifully out in the garden. They add height, movement and colour that lasts right into the warmest months. If you are wanting a feature that handles the heat and still brings wildlife in, you cannot go wrong with a kangaroo paw.

Of course, it would not be December without the classic poinsettia. They have become such a symbol of Christmas and something about those bright bracts immediately creates a festive atmosphere in any home. They are surprisingly easy to care for. Bright indirect light keeps the colour strong, and gentle watering allows the soil to dry slightly between drinks. A poinsettia that is kept cosy and cared for through summer will reward you well past Christmas and often right into autumn. They make a beautiful centrepiece or a thoughtful seasonal gift.

Speaking of gifts, the first of our new season Phalaenopsis orchids have arrived and they are absolutely stunning. Their long arching stems and elegant flowers make them one of the most loved indoor plants at this time of year. They last far longer than a bouquet, and once you know their rhythm they can rebloom beautifully. A little morning light, regular feeding, even moisture and a comfortable indoor position are all they need. They make the perfect present when you want something special, something graceful and something that feels like it carries a bit of celebration with it.

The summer flower garden is truly at its best in December. It is full of colour, resilience, beauty and life. Whether you are planting out pots for Christmas guests, refreshing a sunny corner or looking for something meaningful to gift, the nursery is overflowing with festive choices right now. It is a beautiful time to bring colour into your garden and into your home.

Drop in and let yourself be inspired.
