August in Tasmania – Plant Now for a Garden Full of Colour and Fragrance

August marks the tail end of winter in Tasmania — and while the mornings might still be crisp, the promise of spring is already in the air. Wattle is starting to bloom, buds are swelling, and gardeners all over the state are beginning to feel that familiar urge to get their hands in the soil. At Harmony, we’ve stocked up with some stunning plants that are ready to bring beauty, fragrance and colour into your garden — and there’s no better time to plant.

One of the absolute standouts this week is Lavender 'The Princess'. This compact, vibrant variety is an Australian-bred beauty, renowned for its electric pink blooms and long flowering period. It’s a real showstopper in pots or garden beds, and the bees absolutely adore it. We’re offering a special members-only price of three plants for $40 (normally $14.95 each), so it’s a great time to grab a few while they’re fresh in-store.

Pieris are just starting to burst into bloom with their delicate, lily of the valley-like flowers cascading like little bells. They’re a true feature plant at the nursery right now and always draw attention with their graceful form and evergreen structure. Another plant getting people talking this month is Chamelaucium ‘Dee’s Delight’ — a gorgeous waxflower with citrus-zingy edible foliage and dainty blooms that have even been featured on MasterChef for their incredible flavour and visual appeal. They’re perfect for cake decorating or simply enjoying in the garden, and we’re thrilled to have them back in stock.

Azaleas are also hitting their stride, and they’re looking superb this season. Whether you're after a soft pastel or a fiery burst of colour, they’re putting on a brilliant display and are a great way to add instant impact to shaded spots in the garden.

For those chasing seasonal colour, there are still plenty of cool-season annuals to plant that will brighten your garden in the coming weeks. The pansies and snapdragons are thriving in this weather, and calendulas are bouncing with vibrant golden flowers. Dianthus are flowering beautifully too, bringing that classic cottage fragrance and a cheerful splash of pinks and reds.

Among the perennials, hellebores are continuing their late-winter magic. Varieties like ‘Anna’s Red’ and Moondance are proving popular for their bold flowers and easy-going nature, and they look fantastic when planted en masse beneath deciduous trees or along shaded pathways. Daphne is also just beginning to bloom — and if you know, you know. The fragrance is unbeatable. Tuck one near the front door or a garden bench and you’ll be rewarded every time you walk past.

And don’t forget, our summer bulbs have arrived Peony roses, lilies, and lily of the valley and are best planted in the next four weeks to ensure a spectacular summer display. We always recommend getting in early while stocks are fresh and selection is at its best.

August is one of those transitional months that brings with it so much possibility. Whether you’re filling a few pots, refreshing a garden bed, or planning a total backyard makeover, now’s the time to start. Pop into Harmony and let us help you find the perfect plants to suit your space. Our undercover shopping area means you can browse comfortably no matter the weather — and as always, we’re here with top-quality plants, friendly advice, and that little something extra you won’t find anywhere else.
