Tasmannia lanceolata, commonly known as Mountain Pepper or Tasmanian Pepperberry, is a dioecious shrub native to woodlands and cool temperate rainforests of southeastern Australia, including Tasmania. The female plants of this species are particularly valued for their production of spicy, dark purple to black berries that are used both as a culinary spice and in traditional medicine.
Characteristics:
- Height: Typically grows to about 2-10 meters tall.
- Leaves: Features aromatic, lance-shaped leaves that are dark green and glossy, turning redder in colder conditions.
- Flowers: Small, white to pale yellow flowers bloom directly on the stems before the leaves emerge in early spring.
- Fruit: Produces peppery berries that mature in late summer to autumn. Only female plants bear fruit, and they require a male plant nearby for pollination.
