Description
Spectacular yellow flower heads and large toothed foliage on a large shrub to small tree (5 to 10+ metres) are the key features of this iconic Western Australian Banksia. New foliage growth can be red coloured. It makes a great feature shrub and is especially good for coastal areas. It is a very low maintenance plant. Doesn’t like excessive humidity, and prefers a well drained sandy soil, can also be container grown. It can be slow to flower, but worth growing for the beautiful foliage alone. Moderate frost tolerance. The large seed cones are often used in woodturning.
SEED SOWING – Sow in spring or autumn. Sow on the surface of good quality seed raising mix and only just cover the seed with more mix, they should not be sown too deeply. Keep moist but not wet, as over wet conditions can cause the seed to rot. Smoke treatment is not necessary but may improve germination. If you decide to use it, there are smoke granules also available here, and they can be sprinkled over at seed planting time. Seed germinates in three to five weeks. If germinating in pots or punnets, prick out new seedlings at the cotyledon stage.
