Mission statement
At Harmony Garden Centre, our commitment to sustainability runs deep within the roots of our business. We understand that our actions today shape the world we leave behind for future generations, and we take our responsibility towards the environment seriously.
One of the cornerstones of our sustainability efforts is the Native Tube recycle program. Through our partnership with Froghollow Nursery, our preferred native plant supplier, we offer a simple and effective solution to reduce plastic waste. Customers can return their used 50mm native tubes to us, and we ensure that these pots are washed, sanitised, and reused. Froghollow Nursery, an eco-conscious business, complements our vision by being off-grid and solar-powered, practicing organic and renewable principles.
When it comes to water usage, we have invested in state-of-the-art technology for our undercover nursery. Our Priva roof technology not only reduces our watering requirements but also enables us to catch and reuse 100% of the water. This ensures our outdoor greenlife is nurtured in optimal conditions, resulting in healthier root development and better overall plant performance once they are planted in gardens. Our plants are like well-conditioned athletes, establishing faster and experiencing minimal loss during transplantation, thanks to this advanced roofing structure.
Being the only retail garden centre in Tasmania that captures and reuses water using food-grade technology, we take great pride in our sustainable water practices. Every drop of water used for watering our outdoor plants is collected, filtered through a UV filter, and stored in 90,000 litres of tank storage. This water is then recirculated through the entire process, minimising our water consumption and irrigating our display garden to further reduce water usage.
Priva, the company that designed the working brain for our greenhouse, shares our vision for sustainable living and offers leading-edge technologies for climate control and process automation in buildings and horticulture. Beyond the business aspect, Priva values long-term relationships based on respect, honesty, and transparency, aligning with our own family business values.
At Harmony Garden Centre, we take waste management seriously. We have our own worm farms that compost green waste onsite, generating nutrient-rich worm castings, which we also supply to our customers. In our efforts to reduce single-use plastic, we have partnered with My Eco Bag, our preferred supplier of compostable carry bags. While we are considering charging for these bags in the future, currently, we offer them for free, encouraging shoppers to choose eco-friendly options.
Although we have tried to set up a plastic pot recycle program for all types of plastic pots, the sheer volume and contamination have proven challenging. However, we continue to explore solutions and hope to partner with either a government initiative or receive a grant to tackle this issue on a larger scale in the future.
We also seek ways to reduce commercial waste, including compostable potato bags. While we have not yet found a suitable home garden recycling system for these bags, we continue to explore various options and collaborate with suppliers like Pact Trading to address this challenge.
At Harmony Garden Centre, sustainability isn't just a buzzword – it's a way of life. We are dedicated to making a positive impact on our community and the environment by incorporating eco-conscious practices into every aspect of our operations. Together, we strive to nurture a greener, more harmonious world for generations to come.
