Mother-in-law Tongue (Sansevieria trifasciata)
The Sansevieria trifasciata, or snake plant, is a nearly indestructible indoor plant beloved for its architectural form, striking upright leaves, and minimal care requirements. It's truly a plant that thrives on neglect, making it perfect for busy plant parents or forgetful forget-me-nots.
Light:
Snake plants are incredibly adaptable to light conditions. They thrive in bright indirect sunlight but can tolerate low light and even some direct sun (although too much direct sun can scorch the leaves). So, whether you have a sunny windowsill or a dimly lit corner, a snake plant will likely do just fine.
Watering:
Remember, underwatering is always better than overwatering with snake plants. They store water in their thick leaves and prefer to dry out completely between waterings. In fact, overwatering is the most common mistake snake plant owners make and can lead to root rot. A good rule of thumb is to water your snake plant once every two to four weeks, depending on the light it receives and the pot size.
Potting Mix:
Since snake plants are susceptible to root rot, they need a well-draining potting mix. A cactus or succulent mix is ideal, as it allows excess water to drain quickly. You can also add some perlite or pumice to your regular potting mix for extra drainage.
Additional Care:
Snake plants require minimal care beyond watering and occasional dusting. They don't need to be fertilized often, maybe once or twice a year with a half-strength liquid fertilizer. They also don't need to be misted, as their thick leaves store moisture well.
